Sibiu - The Stairs Passage

Fagaras Ridge

The Fagaras Mountains, also known as the Transylvanian Alps, stretch for about 70 km in length and 40 km in width in the very centre of Romania. They are home to the highest peaks in the Romanian Carpathian range and to a great number of glacial lakes and valleys, that stand as evidence of the geological past.

The proposed itinerary takes you all along the main crest on over 100 km of mountain paths that stroll from one alpine beauty to another, giving you the chance to touch just about every touristic objective located on the main crest or in the immediate vicinity.

Day 1: Bucharest - Sibiu

On the first day you will be taken to the medieval city of Sibiu, where you will make the necessary shopping for provisions needed during the trip. Afterwards you will be free to explore the architectural and historical wonders of the city, along with its fervescent night life.

Day 2: Sibiu - Valea Marului (380 m) - Pau Peak (1.172 m) - Strambanu Peak (1.511 m) - Chica Pietrelor (1.606 m) - Corbului Pass (1.568 m)

The itinerary starts in the westernmost part of the Fagaras Mts. main ridge and takes you from the Olt valley to the main ridge, climbing over 1250 m on the way.

Day 3: Corbului Pass (1.586 m) - Chica Lacului (1.649 m) - Chica Fedelesului (1.820 m) - Tataru Peak (1.888 m) - Apa Cumpanita Pass (1.807 m) - Moasa Peak (2.034 m) - Gavanu Peak (2.153 m) - Suru Pass (2.110 m) - Rosiile Pass (2.159 m) - Budislavu Peak (2.343 m) - Vartopu Rosu Peak (2.233 m) - Avrig Lake (2.014 m)

This day you will be taken on the first really alpine trek of this itinerary to the glacial lake of Avrig where you will be spending the night.

Day 4: Avrig Lake (2.014 m) - Garbova Peak (2.188 m) - Scarita Pass (2.125 m) - Scara Peak (2.306 m) - Scarisoara Peak (2.261 m) - Scara Pass (2.146 m) - Mazgravu Peak (2.277 m) - Serbota Pass (2.123 m) - Serbota Peak (2.327 m) - Saratii Peak (2.365 m) - Cleopatra Pass (2.130 m)

A long day-walk takes you to the foothill of probably the most imposing peak in the Fagaras Mts. And the second highest peak in Romania - Negoiu (2.535 m)

Day 5: Cleopatra Pass (2.130 m) - Negoiu Peak (2.535 m) - Caltun Lake (2.150 m) - Laitel Peak (2.390 m) - Doamnei Pass (2.294 m) - Paltinu (2.398 m) - Iezeru Caprei Peak (2.417 m) - Capra Pass (2.315 m) - Capra Lake (2.230 m)

On the fifth day you reach the middle point of the Fagaras itinerary, where you can also renew your provisions at the lodges situated on the Transfagarasan Highway.

Day 6: Capra Lake (2.230 m) - Portita Arpasului (2.180 m) - Arpasu Mare Peak (2.468 m) - Mircii Peak (2.470 m) - Podu Giurgiului Lake (2.268 m) - Podragu Pass (2.307 m) - Podragu Lake (2.140 m)

This part of your journey through Fagaras Mts. Is considered one of the most beautiful in Carpathian range. At the end of the day you will reach Podragu glacial circus with some beautiful glacial lakes, waterfalls and a mountain lodge.

Day 7: Podragu Lake (2.140 m) - Podragu Pass (2.307 m) - Corabia Peak (2.406 m) - Ucisoara Peak (2.390 m) - Orzanelei Pass (2.268 m) - Vistea Mare Peak (2.527 m) - Moldoveanu Peak (2.544 m) - Portita Vistei (2.310 m) - Hartopu Ursului (2.454 m) - Galbenele Peak (2.436 m) - Fereastra Racorele (2.297 m) - Galasescu Mic (2.398 m) - Fereastra Mica a Sambetei (2.196 m) - Slanina Peak (2.268 m) - Fereastra Mare a Sambetei (2.138 m)

The longest itinerary of the trip takes you over the Top of Romania (Moldoveanu, 2.544 m) and continues on the ridge through some spectacular alpine landscapes.

Day 8: Fereastra Mare a Sambetei (2.138 m) - Coltul Balaceni (2.286 m) - La Cheia Bandei Peak (2.381 m) - Mogos Peak (2.398 m) - Lacului Pass (2.338 m) - Iezer Peak (2.429 m) - Fundu Bandei Peak (2.454 m) - Leaota Peak (2.312 m) - Zarnei Pass (1.923 m) - Zarna Peak (2.223 m) - Bratila Pass (2.122 m)

The last day spent over 2.000 m high offers you great views over the Iezer and Piatra Craiului Mts. and the great Pecineagu lake.

Day 9: Bratila Pass (2.122 m) - Vladului Pass (2.182 m) - Belia Peak (2.229 m) - Lutele Peak (2.176 m) - Comisul Peak (1.883 m) - Comisul Mic Peak (1.690 m) - Lerescu Pass (1.467 m) - Lerescu Mic Peak (1.503 m) - Manastirii Peak (1.513 m) - Tamasu Mare Peak (1.735 m) - Plaiu Foii (875 m)

The last day in the mountains finds you on a long and tiring descent of over 1400 m until you reach the Plaiu Foii pension.

Day 10: Plaiu Foii - Brasov - Bucharest

This day you will be transferred to the airport.
